Overview
There are different levels of accreditation. For Manhattan Tech, we have institutional accreditation and specialized/programmatic accreditation. Specialized, or programmatic, accreditation applies to a specific program or department and indicates that particular program meets designated standards. Examples of program accreditation at MATC include ASE for AMT, ACEN for ADN, and NAACLS for MLT. Note that a program may offer third-party credentials from an independent body, but that body may not accredit the program itself.
Institutional accreditation applies to the entire institution, indicating that all of MATC is working together and contributing to our institutional goals. According to The Higher Learning Commission (HLC), institutional accreditation validates the quality of an institution's academic programs at all degree levels at all locations. It also looks at the college as a whole, including:
- The soundness of its governance and administration
- Adherence to mission
- The sustainability of finances
- The sufficiency of resources
Aaccreditation is a formal, independent process that determines if Manhattan Techmeets defined standards of quality. Manhattan Techis accredited by HLC, which is recognized by the US Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education as a federally sanctioned accrediting body.
Why is it important?
There are many benefits:
Accreditation is one indicator of MATC's quality as an institution. The criteria for accreditation are the same for all institutions, which means that MATC meets the same standards as others although we may use the different methods.
Students can only receive federal financial aid at a federally accredited institution. This includes federal grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study aid. By being an accredited institution, students can use their federal financial aid here.
Receiving an education from an accredited institution is an indicator to an employer of the quality of the student's education.
Through the accreditation process, MATC analyzes data to evaluate our successes and determine areas that may need improved. This allows us to ensure continuous improvement and quality.
